Since we opened our doors in 2009, the world of commerce has evolved immensely, and so has Square. After enabling anyone to take payments and never miss a sale, we saw sellers stymied by disparate, outmoded products and tools that wouldn't work together.
So we expanded into software and started building integrated, omnichannel solutions - to help sellers sell online, manage inventory, offer buy now, pay later functionality, book appointments, engage loyal buyers, and hire and pay staff. Across it all, we've embedded financial services tools at the point of sale, so merchants can access a business loan and manage their cash flow in one place. Afterpay furthers our goal to provide omnichannel tools that unlock meaningful value and growth, enabling sellers to capture the next generation shopper, increase order sizes, and compete at a larger scale.
Today, we are a partner to sellers of all sizes - large, enterprise-scale businesses with complex operations, sellers just starting, as well as merchants who began selling with Square and have grown larger over time. As our sellers grow, so do our solutions. There is a massive opportunity in front of us. We're building a significant, meaningful, and lasting business, and we are helping sellers worldwide do the same.
The Role
We're looking for a product-focused Staff Software Engineer with deep frontend expertise to join our Square Platform Web team. In this role, you'll contribute to two critical platform areas that power experiences across the Square ecosystem, helping sellers and developers thrive.
The Teams You'll Support:

  • Identity Platform - This team empowers sellers to onboard into Square's financial ecosystem. From verifying identities to ensuring secure account access with features like passkeys, we build the flows that help sellers get started and stay secure.
  • Developer Platform - We help third-party developers build meaningful tools and businesses on Square. You'll help create developer-facing products like our API Explorer, App Marketplace, and documentation that makes integration seamless.

You Will:

  • Lead the evolution of Square's web architecture for both Identity and Developer experiences
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with engineers, product managers, and designers to shape solutions that align with Square's mission and product strategy
  • Mentor engineers across the org, setting the bar for frontend best practices, performance, and accessibility
  • Contribute to and influence Square's broader Web Engineering community, driving shared standards and innovation
  • Champion an inclusive, psychologically safe environment where diverse perspectives are welcomed and empowered

You Have

  • 12+ years of industry experience, typically supported by a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or equivalent hands-on expertise.
  • A track record of driving cross-functional collaboration and delivering meaningful impact at scale
  • Deep expertise in JavaScript, TypeScript, and React, with a strong understanding of modern frontend architecture
  • Experience creating detailed technical documentation and a collaborative approach to working with Design, Product, and Engineering peers
  • A product mindset and strong customer empathy - you care about the "why" behind the work and want to shape impactful user experiences
  • A passion for building reliable, and thoughtful frontend systems, with a curious mind that's always seeking to improve

Technologies We Use and Teach

  • JavaScript, Typescript
  • React, Ember, Storybook
  • MySQL, NoSQL, Redis, Kafka
  • Protocol Buffers, Terraform, Kubernetes, Envoy

What you need to know about the Seattle Tech Scene

Home to tech titans like Microsoft and Amazon, Seattle punches far above its weight in innovation. But its surrounding mountains, sprinkled with world-famous hiking trails and climbing routes, make the city a destination for outdoorsy types as well. Established as a logging town before shifting to shipbuilding and logistics, the Emerald City is now known for its contributions to aerospace, software, biotech and cloud computing. And its status as a thriving tech ecosystem is attracting out-of-town companies looking to establish new tech and engineering hubs.

Key Facts About Seattle Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 287,000; 13% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Amazon, Microsoft, Meta, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, cloud computing, software, biotechnology, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $3.1 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Madrona, Fuse, Tola, Maveron
  • Research Centers and Universities: University of Washington, Seattle University, Seattle Pacific University, Allen Institute for Brain Science, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Seattle Children’s Research Institute
