The Role

Company Description
Square builds common business tools in unconventional ways so more people can start, run, and grow their businesses. When Square started, it was difficult and expensive (or just plain impossible) for some businesses to take credit cards. Square made credit card payments possible for all by turning a mobile phone into a credit card reader. Since then Square has been building an entire business toolkit of both hardware and software products including Banking, Commerce, Staff and Customers.
Today, we are a partner to sellers of all sizes - large, enterprise-scale businesses with complex operations, sellers just starting, as well as merchants who began selling with Square and have grown larger over time. As our sellers grow, so do our solutions. We're working to find new and better ways to help businesses succeed on their own terms-and we're looking for people like you to help shape tomorrow at Square.
Job Description

Unlike traditional business financing products, Square Loans are extended to pre-qualified sellers. As a Data Scientist on the Square Loans team, you will partner with cross functional stakeholders like Product, Credit Policy, Engineering, and Operations to shape and execute strategies that expand credit eligibility, enhance loan gross profit, and improve cohesive banking user experience on a global scale.
You will:

  • Be a strategic partner to influence product roadmap and guide Square Loans team to navigate through product opportunities
  • Operate cross-functionally and build strong partnerships with PM, Engineers, Credit Policy, Finance and Strategy, etc.
  • Design and lead A/B testings for Loans growth and Loans repayment optimization
  • Influence stakeholders to focus on product gaps and opportunities with quantifiable business and customer impact
  • Identify and develop a strong understanding of lending products and ideal customer profile with data exploration
  • Design and own business metrics for measuring lending products success

  • Qualifications
    You have:

    • 5+ years of Data Science or other quantitative field
    • Familiarity with product data science, understanding and tracking user behavior using analytical lenses like engagement, conversion, cohorts, segmentation and funnel analysis.
    • Experience collaborating and building relationships with cross-functional stakeholders, influencing business decisions with data.
    • Ability to lead initiatives across multiple product areas and communicate findings with leadership and product teams.
    • Advanced proficiency with data, analytics, and visualization technologies (we use SQL, Looker, and Python).
    • (Preferred) Experience in business lending, banking or payment services

    What We Do

Since we opened our doors in 2009, the world of commerce has evolved immensely, and so has Square. After enabling anyone to take payments and never miss a sale, we saw sellers stymied by disparate, outmoded products and tools that wouldn’t work together.

So we expanded into software and started building integrated, omnichannel solutions – to help sellers sell online, manage inventory, offer buy now, pay later functionality through Afterpay, book appointments, engage loyal buyers, and hire and pay staff. Across it all, we’ve embedded financial services tools at the point of sale, so merchants can access a business loan and manage their cash flow in one place. Afterpay furthers our goal to provide omnichannel tools that unlock meaningful value and growth, enabling sellers to capture the next generation shopper, increase order sizes, and compete at a larger scale.

Today, we are a partner to sellers of all sizes – large, enterprise-scale businesses with complex operations, sellers just starting, as well as merchants who began selling with Square and have grown larger over time. As our sellers grow, so do our solutions. There is a massive opportunity in front of us. We’re building a significant, meaningful, and lasting business, and we are helping sellers worldwide do the same.
