About ngrok Inc.

ngrok is a universal gateway trusted by over 7M developers to get their apps online faster in a secure way. With just one line of code or just one command, developers can deliver their services and offload non-functional requirements such as authentication, observability, performance, and high availability. All without provisioning legacy proxies, load balancers or VPNs. ngrok’s simplicity has made it a de-facto standard tool among developers and operations teams, and the world’s top brands — including GitHub, Okta, HashiCorp, and Twilio — recommend ngrok as a key technology partner.

Our mission is to free developers and operations teams from the complexities of networking, so they can focus on creating breakthrough apps and APIs—without getting bogged down by IPs, ports, DNS, and firewall configurations. This gives you an unparalleled opportunity to drive real innovation and make a lasting impact, all while doing the most meaningful work of your career.

The opportunity

ngrok is looking for a Principal Product Designer to shape the future of the product experience and brand identity. As a key member of the Design team, this role will work closely with Product, Engineering, Marketing, and Executive Leadership to drive forward the company’s key strategic initiatives. The Design team is currently composed of several highly competent generalists who can flex across both Product and Brand Identity work, and we’re looking to bring on another designer who fits that mold.

We’re looking for someone who can take ownership over projects and comfortably lead their collaborators through the entire design process, from early discovery, to ideation, prototyping, and validation, all the way through delivery of final high-fidelity assets that support the implementation of real, functioning product in our user’s hands. This role will be empowered to bring design best practices to the team, and to raise the level of quality of design at ngrok.

What you’ll accomplish

Within 30 days

  • Start building relationships within your team(s) and across the company
  • Learn how the platform works, its history, and where it’s headed
  • Perform a heuristic evaluation based on your first experience with the product, identifying opportunities for high-impact improvements

Within 6 months

  • Lead your team(s) through the entire product development lifecycle, from early-stage discovery, through ideation and solution exploration, all the way to delivery of real, functioning product in the hands of our customers
  • Identify and lead initiatives aimed at improving how we build product at ngrok, constantly ensuring we’re solving the right problems in the right way for the right people
  • Spearhead generative research campaigns to uncover previously unidentified needs within our user base

Within 1 year

  • Raise the overall level of design quality shown in the products we build
  • Contribute to several high-impact, strategically important projects to transform the product
  • See real world impact from the work you do

Skills

  • 7+ years of hands on product design work at technology companies (bonus points for experience working on products for developers)
  • World class product design capabilities as demonstrated through a portfolio - we’re particularly looking for someone who is strong in both visual design and research, and who can connect the dots throughout the process
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Comfort and proficiency in workshop facilitation and user research
  • Bonus Points
    • Experience working on products for developers
    • A good understanding of basic networking concepts
    • Basic front-end development experience for building quick and dirty prototypes

Compensation

Tier 1 (SF, LA, Seattle, NYC): Minimum salary of $176,000 to maximum $220,000

Tier 2 (rest of US) : Minimum salary of $162,000 to maximum $202,000

Job level and actual compensation will be evaluated based on factors including, but not limited to, qualifications objectively assessed during the interview process (including skills and prior relevant experience, potential impact, and scope of role), internal equity with other team members, market data, and specific work location. We provide an attractive mix of salary and equity.
