It all started with an idea at Block in 2013. Initially built to take the pain out of peer-to-peer payments, Cash App has gone from a simple product with a single purpose to a dynamic ecosystem, developing unique financial products, including Afterpay/Clearpay, to provide a better way to send, spend, invest, borrow and save to our 50+ million monthly active customers. We want to redefine the world's relationship with money to make it more relatable, instantly available, and universally accessible.
Today, Cash App has thousands of employees working globally across office and remote locations, with a culture geared toward innovation, collaboration and impact. We've been a distributed team since day one, and many of our roles can be done remotely from the countries where Cash App operates. No matter the location, we tailor our experience to ensure our employees are creative, productive, and happy.
The Team
The Design Systems team is responsible for the UI development experience at Cash App. We build systems that power high-quality design and development. We exist to solve the common problems experienced by most engineers and designers via robust and reliable tools and frameworks. We are ultimately accountable for the quality of design and engineering in our applications. We want to make creating exceptional, high-quality, and groundbreaking features at Cash App fast, intuitive, safe, and enjoyable.
The Role
On the Design Systems team, our primary customers are engineers and designers at Cash App. Your team will maintain, curate, and evolve our design system. You will also be responsible for messaging systems (in-app messages, badging, etc.), navigation infrastructure, and other UI patterns. This team thinks long-term about our technical strategy for UI development, and provides clear guidance and tools that make this easy for our customers. As the Engineering Manager for the Design Systems team, you will be personally responsible for the growth of the mobile engineers on this team; collaborating with your fellow design, server, and product partners on decisions that will directly impact the UI/UX of Cash App. You will help the team to maintain a deep connection with our customers to ensure we are serving their needs.
You Will

  • Manage and grow a team of systems-focused mobile engineers.
  • Foster a human-centered culture that supports the team in growing together.
  • Provide both technical and career guidance for individuals and managers on your team.
  • Create a tightly aligned and collaborative partnership between the client and design, server, product, product data science and machine learning (e.g. shared roadmapping, prioritization, goals, etc.).
  • Contribute directly to quarterly and annual strategic plans.
  • Support the building of new, exciting functionality into an application designed to provide concrete value to our customers.
  • Own the growth and maintenance of your area.
  • Lead and participate in technical, design, and product discussions with your fellow partners on the team, and with other partners throughout the organization.
  • Continue building a world-class team through hiring, coaching, and ongoing development.

You Have

  • 3+ years of experience managing and mentoring engineers (including providing feedback, investing in career growth, and growing teams).
  • Strong communication, collaboration, and stakeholder management skills in an environment where precision and nuance matters.
  • A focus on the design of products from a customer perspective. We are here to make their lives easier, and want to ensure we're putting our customers first through every piece of engineering.
  • Commitment to the continuous improvement of yourself, your teammates, and our software.
  • An excitement for sharing your own ideas, and openness to the ideas of others.
  • Experience working with design systems that have been built with the highest quality (accessible, performant, tested), are well-documented, and enjoyed by the engineers who use them.
