An overview of this role

As the Staff Technical Program Manager for FinOps at GitLab, you'll lead initiatives to maximize cloud infrastructure efficiency while maintaining clear financial visibility across the organization. You'll partner closely with Infrastructure Engineering, Finance, and Product teams to optimize costs and capacity usage, ensuring we achieve operational excellence without compromising performance. This role bridges technical infrastructure decisions with financial strategy, helping GitLab make smart investments in our cloud resources while driving continuous cost optimization.

What you'll do
Cost Optimization and Efficiency

  • Proactively monitor cloud usage patterns and identify anomalies, enabling quick action to prevent cost overruns.
  • Develop and implement sophisticated cost allocation and chargeback models
  • Build unit economics frameworks that provide actionable insights to Engineering, Finance, Product and other business teams
  • Create advanced forecasting models for both capacity requirements and infrastructure spend
  • Design and implement automation for capacity management and cost optimization processes
  • Drive the development of capacity planning approaches and dashboards for better visibility

Strategy & Process Improvement

  • Develop and articulate long-term strategy and short-term plans in collaboration with engineering teams
  • Build consensus amongst cross-functional teams through strong quantitative analysis and actionable recommendations
  • Design and launch new processes and improvements to help teams scale
  • Research and evaluate new technologies to enhance our capacity management capabilities
  • Provide technical leadership in capacity-related architectural decisions
  • Foster a culture of efficiency and optimization across the engineering organization

Program Management

  • Lead cross-functional initiatives to optimize cloud spending and capacity utilization
  • Create and track KPIs for measuring program success and cost efficiency
  • Drive quarterly planning and budgeting processes for cloud infrastructure
  • Manage stakeholder relationships across Engineering, Finance, Product and other business teams as needed
  • Set project/program success criteria and create measurable milestones

What you'll bring

  • Strong experience in capacity planning, or cloud operations, preferably in a large-scale SaaS environment
  • Excellent quantitative analysis and problem-solving skills.
  • Expertise in data analysis and modeling methodologies for capacity forecasting
  • Proven track record with cloud cost management tools, and capacity planning systems
  • Experience with SaaS business models and economics
  • Strong understanding of cloud computing platforms (AWS, GCP, OCI, SaaS vendors) and Cloud Native technologies (Kubernetes, Prometheus, OpenCost, etc)
  • Experience with cloud cost management tools (Cloudability, CloudHealth, etc.).
  • Solid programming and automation skills (Python, Bash, CI/CD) with experience in infrastructure-as-code (Terraform, Ansible, Chef)
  • Experience with Data Visualization Tools (E.g. Looker Studio, Snowflake, Grafana, Kibana)
  • Solid understanding of data ingestion methodologies (ETL, ELT, dbt, Airflow)
  • Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills, with demonstrated ability to build consensus across teams
  • Able to thrive in a fully remote organization

Remote-Global

The base salary range for this role’s listed level is currently for residents of listed locations only. Grade level and salary ranges are determined through interviews and a review of education, experience, knowledge, skills, abilities of the applicant, equity with other team members, and alignment with market data. See more information on our benefits and equity. Sales roles are also eligible for incentive pay targeted at up to 100% of the offered base salary.

$120,400$258,000 USD
