Our Opportunity: 

We are looking for a Staff Software Engineer to join our Sponsored Ads team.  Sponsored Ads builds a win-win ecosystem for shoppers, brand owners and Chewy! Shoppers are offered a range of alternate options to help them choose better and learn about new products, new brands, new promotions and different price points. Brand owners and advertisers get to showcase their product offerings in the front row for their target audience (proud pet owners) and improve their reach. Advertising is a critical component of the ecommerce ecosystem and provides a critical revenue stream to the company.   

As a member to the Sponsored Ads team, you’ll be part of core leadership team and will influence technical strategy across product search and discovery, relevance and ranking, prediction and auction of large selection of sponsored products in Chewy catalog. You’ll be at forefront of driving technology driven business impact.

What You'll Do: 

  • Lead the architectural design and implementation of the ML platform, with a direct impact on the financial performance of sponsored ads 
  • In collaboration with Product, own the Platform roadmap and balance investment into functional features with long-term concerns for stability and quality. 
  • Make sound architectural choices that set up the platform for future growth and expandability.  
  • Collaborate with the Data Science team and ensure that the Platform supports training, testing, and shipping ML models. 
  • Lead the ongoing execution efforts while holding a high bar for quality and velocity of development.   
  • Provide guidance and mentoring to junior engineers, build and foster a strong engineering team culture, and be a key contributor in setting the standard of the engineering org. 
  • Drive innovation through rapid prototyping and iterative development. 
  • Decompose complex problems into simple, straight-forward solutions that operationally scale and are easily maintained. 
  • Instill engineering excellence in the team and have the drive to focus on scalability, resiliency, high availability and performance of applications. 
  • Generate and analyze engineering metrics to inform leadership and make data driven decisions. 
  • Exhibit excellent verbal and written communication and convey dissenting opinions in a constructive manner.  

What You'll Need: 

  • 10+ years of software development experience. 
  • Experience and Domain expertise in digital advertising or marketing technologies. 
  • Bachelor's in computer science or related field. 
  • Exceptional leadership and communication skills. 
  • Strong computer science fundamentals and programming skills. 
  • Experience developing software in an agile environment with CI/CD. 
  • Expert understanding how to build and scale cloud-based applications. 
  • Proficiency in Java, Kotlin or similar programming language and technology. 
  • Strong fundamentals on building and scaling cloud-based solutions (AWS). 
  • Proficiency in designing scalable, distributed, low latency and high throughput systems.  
  • Position may require occasional travel. 

Bonus: 

  • Masters or PhD in Computer Science or related field. 
  • Machine Learning and applied science understanding is a plus.  
  • Demonstrated experience taking a project from inception through launch. 

Compensation & Benefits: 

Our salary range for a Machine Learning Engineer III position is $146,500.00 - $234,500.00. The specific salary offered to a candidate may be influenced by a variety of factors including but not limited to the candidate’s relevant experience, education, and work location. In addition, this position is eligible for 401k, and a new hire and annual equity grant.
