Collaborating with product teams, you'll respond to customer feedback, improve products, and contribute to the architecture of the system apps.
The summary above was generated by AI

Since we opened our doors in 2009, the world of commerce has evolved immensely, and so has Square. After enabling anyone to take payments and never miss a sale, we saw sellers stymied by disparate, outmoded products and tools that wouldn't work together.
So we expanded into software and started building integrated, omnichannel solutions - to help sellers sell online, manage inventory, offer buy now, pay later functionality, book appointments, engage loyal buyers, and hire and pay staff. Across it all, we've embedded financial services tools at the point of sale, so merchants can access a business loan and manage their cash flow in one place. Afterpay furthers our goal to provide omnichannel tools that unlock meaningful value and growth, enabling sellers to capture the next generation shopper, increase order sizes, and compete at a larger scale.
Today, we are a partner to sellers of all sizes - large, enterprise-scale businesses with complex operations, sellers just starting, as well as merchants who began selling with Square and have grown larger over time. As our sellers grow, so do our solutions. There is a massive opportunity in front of us. We're building a significant, meaningful, and lasting business, and we are helping sellers worldwide do the same.
The Role
The Android Platform Apps team is responsible for the System Apps and Services running on the Square Android Platform, the platform that powers Square branded Android devices such as Square Register and Square Terminal . As an Android Engineer on the team, you will manage designing, building, and maintaining Square Android System Apps, the user-facing elements of the Square Platform experience used by Square Sellers, as well as services used by internal Square app developers developing features for the platform. Reporting to the engineering manager on the team, you will be involved in the technical details of building available and reliable systems within the Android ecosystem, while also working with product teams to ensure Square to rapidly build new capabilities for our merchants and buyers all over the world.
You Will

  • Lead the architecture, design, and implementation of critical features within the Square Android Platform
  • Represent the team in architectural discussions and stakeholder conversations, serving as a bridge between our team and the broader organization.
  • Help shape the future of our codebase by building flexible, extensible, and reusable components.
  • Foster a culture of engineering excellence and mentor engineers of all experience levels.
  • Hold yourself and your teammates to the highest standard of engineering excellence, with unwavering attention to product reliability.
  • Enjoy working on mobile apps at all levels - from networking up to user interfaces and whatever's in between.
  • Work with product managers, designers, and data scientists to shape the future of Square device offerings.
  • Respond to customer feedback to improve our products.
  • Focus on operational excellence to deliver fault-tolerant systems enabling our teams to move fast without negatively affecting our customers
  • Help contribute to a culture of positivity, psychological safety, and inclusivity within the team.

You Have

  • 12+ years of experience working in the Android ecosystem
  • Proficiency in Java or Kotlin for development (we use both)
  • Experience with creating readable, pragmatic code and an appreciation for simple, practical solutions
  • Experience partnering with Hardware and Manufacturing teams to ship platform features
  • Experience partnering with product managers and designers to determine product scope

Nice to have:

  • Experience working with AOSP
  • Experience working with Android frameworks or SDK's

And its status as a thriving tech ecosystem is attracting out-of-town companies looking to establish new tech and engineering hubs.

Key Facts About Seattle Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 287,000; 13% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Amazon, Microsoft, Meta, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, cloud computing, software, biotechnology, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $3.1 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Madrona, Fuse, Tola, Maveron
