ImpactAs a Staff Engineer, you will play a pivotal role in shaping our data ecosystem by advancing the implementation of a modern data mesh framework. This framework empowers scalable, self-service data movement while ensuring robust, centralized governance. You will be instrumental in developing and maintaining critical services, APIs, and tools that enable seamless, self-serve data workflows for engineering teams. Additionally, you will play a central role in establishing and refining industry best practices, ensuring they are documented and continuously improved.
Every day you will Collaborate with engineering and data teams across both business and technical domains to gather requirements, translating them into scalable, high-performance data solutions that meet the organization's evolving needs for data movement, lead the design and development of comprehensive data platforms, and peform rapid prototyping and evaluation of new systems, processes, and tools, rigorously assessing alternatives to implement the most effective solutions.

What You’ll Need to Be Successful

  • Collaborate with engineering and data teams across both business and technical domains to gather requirements, translating them into scalable, high-performance data solutions that meet the organization's evolving needs for data movement.

  • Lead the design and development of comprehensive data platforms, ensuring alignment with the company’s broader data strategy and maximizing value delivery.

  • Spearhead the rapid prototyping and evaluation of new systems, processes, and tools, rigorously assessing alternatives to implement the most effective solutions.

  • Regularly engage with senior leadership, including Managers and Directors, to provide strategic insights and project-level updates, focusing on identifying challenges, shaping solutions, and aligning on priorities.

  • Navigate and thrive in ambiguous environments, using a combination of technical expertise, strategic thinking, and collaboration to drive clarity and deliver effective data solutions, even when requirements or outcomes are not fully defined.

  • Mentor and guide Data Engineering staff through code reviews, providing expertise on internal processes, tools, and best practices, while fostering the growth and development of the Data Platform team.

 KNOWLEDGE: People in this role are expected to have a software engineering background along with demonstrated focus in data modeling and architecture for analysis.

  • 7+ years of experience in Data/Software Engineering.People in this role are expected to have a software development background and have an understanding of the data and retail business domains. 

  • Expertise in Python programming language is required.

  • Familiarity with REST principles and experience designing APIs (preferably using FastAPI) that adhere to them is preferred.

  • Expertise with SQL in a transactional query environment (e.g. PostgreSQL) is preferred.

  • Experience with Message Queuing Systems (e.g.Kafka) and familiarity with the kafka-connect framework is required.

  • Expertise with Cloud Platforms (e.g.GCP) is preferred.

  • Experience with version control (e.g. Git) is required.

  • Able to apply Software/Data Engineering best practices (e.g. containerization, CI/CD).

  • Able to document processes and ideas and put strong emphasis towards documentation.

  • Bachelor’s Degree or higher in a quantitative (STEM) field

Work Arrangement

Shipt considers candidates located near a Shipt office or workspace in Birmingham, San Francisco, or Minneapolis to be hybrid, which means that they have the flexibility to work from home (with leader approval) or at a Shipt office in order to facilitate the ability to innovate, collaborate, and spark team connections. In-office expectations will vary by role and leader.  Certain roles may require in-office presence on a full-time basis. Employees will also be eligible to receive discretionary vacation for exempt team members, paid holidays throughout the calendar year and paid sick leave.  Other compensation includes eligibility for an annual bonus and the potential for restricted stock units based on role.

Pay Range:

Metro Areas of Boston, District of Columbia, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle and New York City: 

$110,421-$220,842

All other locations:

$92,036-$184,071

Please note that the salary range above is a guideline, and individual total compensation will vary based on factors such as qualifications, skill level, competencies, and work location.
