Interested in joining a growing company where you will work with talented colleagues, enhance a supportive and energetic culture, and be part of the climate solution? At Energy Solutions, we focus on the big impacts. And we believe that market-based programs can be a powerful force to deliver large-scale energy, carbon, and water-use savings. Since 1995, we’ve harnessed that power to offer proven, performance-based solutions for our utility, government, and institutional customers.

We are currently seeking a full-time Senior Staff Engineer to join our Policy & Ratings Department as a mechanical equipment specialist focused on regulatory and research initiatives. As a member of the Energy Solutions team, you will have a broad impact on state, national and international energy markets through our work for major utilities, city and state governments, and other national leaders in energy efficiency policy. This unique opportunity, paired with Energy Solutions’ mission driven approach, creates a perfect environment for individuals who want to apply their skills and energy towards an expeditious transition to a low carbon future.

The candidate selected to fill this position will have experience in an array of technologies with deep technical expertise in HVAC, refrigeration, and other mechanical systems common in residential, commercial, and industrial spaces. This includes a comprehensive understanding of equipment efficiency and building / system design interactions to achieve enhanced energy performance. Technologies of particular importance include but are not limited to: heat pump technologies (e.g., air-source heat pumps, hydronic heat pumps, and variable refrigerant flow systems), energy and heat recovery systems, dedicated outdoor air systems, refrigeration systems, motor driven systems (including high performance fans and pumps and air distribution system design), low and zero global warming potential refrigerants, thermal energy storage, and load management / demand flexibility. A track record of successful codes and standards strategy development and stakeholder engagement is helpful, including experience with state and federal codes and standards proceedings, test procedure development, negotiated rulemakings, model codes and reach/stretch codes. Experience with building energy modeling software (e.g., EnergyPlus) is desired.

Energy Solutions operates as a predominantly remote workforce with offices in six different locations. Employees who reside within 40 miles of an office will be assigned to that location, though in-office attendance requirements may vary by team. At this time, we are not accepting applications from candidates residing in the following states: Alaska, Delaware, Kentucky, Mississippi, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, and Wyoming.

Daily responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Develop and lead both short-term and long-term strategies to optimize energy savings, load management potential, GHG reductions, and transform markets through codes and standards or other energy policy interventions
  • Analyze the savings, costs, and other impacts of energy efficient and low carbon technologies in the context of energy policy
  • Oversee product testing and other primary data collection strategies needed to fill data gaps in policy settings
  • Participate in industry working groups and technical committees in support of voluntary or mandatory standards and test procedure updates
  • Develop strategic partnerships with industry stakeholders to ensure policy proposals are feasible, equitable, and have ample stakeholder support
  • Write reports on technical topics, such as Title 24 code change proposal reports, including energy savings analyses, cost-effectiveness analyses, and market impacts analyses
  • Develop and deliver presentations on technical topics to a variety of audiences, including clients, government agency decision makers, engineers, and other stakeholders
  • Delegate and oversee more straightforward technical tasks and responsibilities to junior level engineering staff
  • Represent clients in public meetings, negotiated rulemakings, and in publicly docketed comments

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in engineering (mechanical engineering preferred)
  • At least 10 years of engineering or work experience in related area
  • Excellent verbal communication skills, demonstrated ability to write reports, technical papers, and provide technical presentations to knowledgeable audiences
  • Ability to observe Pacific Time working hours as needed
  • Willingness to conduct occasional business travel (approximately 3 to 5 times per year)
  • Ability to work in the US without requiring Energy Solutions to commence or sponsor an immigration case in order to employ you now or in the future.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A Master’s degree in engineering (mechanical engineering preferred) and/or PE license
  • Experience in the development process of Title 24, ASHRAE 90.1, ASHRAE 189.1, IECC, or other energy codes
  • Experience in the development process of California’s Title 20, US DOE’s Appliance Standards Program, EPA’s Energy Star Program, or other state, national, or international appliance or equipment standards efforts
  • Experience operating physics-based building energy modeling software such as EnergyPlus, DOE-2, and APACHE.
  • Experience representing large organizations in public meetings, including government hearings
  • Track record of success working in collaborative roles with diverse teams of partners and industry stakeholders
  • Existing network of professional contacts that contribute to codes and standards development
  • Eagerness to learn and take on new challenges to support our company’s mission
