IonQ is developing the world's most powerful full-stack quantum computer based on trapped-ion technology. We are pushing past the limits of classical physics and current supercomputing technology to unlock a new era of computing. Quantum computing has the potential to impact every area of human society for the better. IonQ’s computers will soon redefine industries like medicine, materials science, finance, artificial intelligence, machine learning, cryptography, and more. IonQ is at the forefront of this technological revolution.

We are looking for Senior Scientist – AMO Transport Theory to join our Quantum Micro-architecture team. You’ll be part of a cross-functional team whose mission is to lead IonQ on its journey to build the world’s best quantum computers to solve the world’s most complex problems. You will play a key role in developing and analyzing detailed models of ion transport in our QPU. In this role you will help to define the technical requirements for our system and help guide our technology choices. This role will specifically focus on details of the complex atomic level structure of the ions used in trapped ion quantum computing.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop detailed numerical and analytic multi-level atomic models of multi-ion systems driven by laser interactions.
  • Analyze numeric and analytic results to determine engineering requirements to reach algorithmic performance goals.
  • Prepare and disseminate reports to inform engineering decision making.
  • Stay current with the latest research and advancements in quantum control techniques and contribute to the continuous improvement of our quantum computing platforms.
  • Contribute to developing institutional knowledge and training resources for AMO physics.

You’d be a good fit with:

  • PhD in Quantum Physics, Engineering or a related field and 3+ years professional experience.
  • Demonstrated experience in modeling light-matter interaction.
  • Proficiency in scientific Python.
  • Demonstrated experience in the modeling of complex quantum systems, specialization in Atomic, Molecular, and Optical (AMO) physics, many-body quantum systems, open quantum systems, or similar.

You’d be a great fit with:

  • PhD in Quantum Physics, Engineering or a related field and 6+ years professional experience.
  • Prior experience in experimental quantum computing or related fields.
  • Experience with trapped ion systems.
