About the Team and the Role

We are looking for a highly skilled and experienced Senior Research Engineer in AI Safety and Fairness to join our dedicated Responsible AI team. In this role, you will be at the forefront of developing and applying rigorous evaluation methods, safety frameworks, and best practices to ensure that sophisticated AI models (including traditional AI modes, generative models, and large language models) align with our company’s ethical standards and values.

You will collaborate with cross-functional teams—applied researchers, engineers, product managers, risk & compliance, and legal—to identify potential risks, conduct detailed evaluations, and drive innovations that safeguard users and society. Your expertise will help us deliver safe, high-quality AI products built for fairness, equity, and adaptability.

What You Will Accomplish

  • Lead AI Evaluations & Risk Mitigation: Apply sophisticated evaluation methods (bias audits, adaptability testing, adversarial analysis, red teaming) to foundation models and deployments.

  • Collaborate with Product Teams: Identify AI risks, propose solutions, and ensure fairness, transparency, and safety from the beginning. Prototype and integrate novel safety techniques.

  • Develop & Automate Safety Pipelines: Build internal libraries, toolkits, and automated safety checks within CI/CD workflows for scalable Responsible AI practices.

  • Establish & Scale Best Practices: Document and promote AI evaluation standards, ensuring company-wide adoption.

  • Align with Regulations & Compliance: Work with Risk & Compliance to integrate regulatory frameworks (EU AI Act, NIST RMF) into AI evaluation strategies.

  • Provide Leadership & Representation: Act as a subject matter expert, advising stakeholders and representing the company in industry forums, conferences, and internal discussions.

What you will bring:

  • Education & Research: PhD (preferred) or Master’s in AI, CS, Stats, or related field with 6+ years of experience (3+ with PhD). Research in responsible AI with publications in top venues.

  • AI/ML Expertise: Strong foundation in AI/ML, large-scale model evaluation, and hands-on experience with PyTorch, TensorFlow, and interpretability tools. Experience in AI/ML pipeline development.

  • Responsible AI & Safety: Deep knowledge of fairness, safety, and AI ethics. Experience with regulatory frameworks (EU AI Act, NIST RMF) and implementing AI safety checks.

  • Industry Contributions: Contributions to open-source tools, AI safety, or responsible AI initiatives, showcasing dedication to advancing standard methodologies.

  • Collaboration & Leadership: Strong communicator with experience leading cross-functional teams and engaging in industry/academic discussions on responsible AI.

Key Facts About Seattle Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 287,000; 13% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Amazon, Microsoft, Meta, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, cloud computing, software, biotechnology, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $3.1 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Madrona, Fuse, Tola, Maveron
  • Research Centers and Universities: University of Washington, Seattle University, Seattle Pacific University, Allen Institute for Brain Science, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Seattle Children’s Research Institute
