Looma Background

Looma is an in-store digital media platform focused on storytelling, education, and recommendations. Their network of in-store screens helps retailers better modernize and monetize their stores, while enabling brands to tell their story directly at the point of decision. All content that airs on Looma’s network is produced or edited by Relay™, their global network of independent filmmakers, editors, and other creators who specialize in point-of-decision content.

Position Summary

As a Senior Data Scientist, you will deepen our understanding of shopper behavior, build models to measure media impact, and develop AI systems that recommend products to shoppers based on their personal needs. You'll join a product team that values joy, curiosity, collaboration, creativity, and adaptability at work. As one of our early team members, you will enjoy significant ownership and influence over key strategic decisions as you grow into the role. We are seeking candidates with proven experience in full-stack data science who thrive in a high-autonomy, high-impact, and high-growth environment. This role reports directly to our VP of Product.

We expect your day-to-day responsibilities to be split into four categories:

  1. Performance Reporting (40%)
  2. AI Recommendation Engines (20%)
  3. Data Infrastructure and ETL Optimization (20%)
  4. A/B Testing & Ad-Hoc Analysis (20%)

Performance Reporting (40%)

  • Enhance Looma’s flagship Campaign Performance Reports (CPRs), which transform flat transactional data into comprehensive marketing KPIs—spanning brand awareness, trial rates, short-term sales impact, and lasting brand loyalty
  • Improve the depth, quality, and reliability of these reports to ensure every advertising dollar is supported by clear, measurable data insights
  • Collaborate across teams on third-party integrations, data engineering, statistical modeling, and product strategy to tailor our reports to the needs of our brand partners

AI Recommendation Engines (20%)

  • Develop innovative AI-driven recommendation engines that help shoppers discover new products to try that fit their tastes, needs, and preferences
  • Create generative content systems that scale these interactive experiences and deepen the level of insights provided to shoppers
  • Tackle complex technical challenges to ensure these systems are locally deployable, powerful, and trusted by leading retail and CPG brands

Data Infrastructure and ETL Optimization (20%)

  • Optimize and scale data ingestion pipelines, aggregation processes, and performance metric tables that underpin products like CPRs and enable scaled handling of ad-hoc analyses
  • Simplify and streamline these processes to boost efficiency, accuracy, and reliability across Looma’s data products

A/B Testing & Ad-Hoc Analysis (20%)

  • Provide in-depth analytical support to the product and content strategy teams, ensuring ongoing optimization of products and media production
  • Manage ad-hoc analytical requests while building self-service tools that enable non-technical team members to plan and execute pilots and A/B tests effectively

Attributes & Experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • A degree in a relevant field such as information science, mathematics, statistics, or computer science
  • 5+ years of data science experience, including recent roles in a startup or early-stage company

Preferred Technical Experience

  • Proficiency with cloud-based data platforms (GCP preferred) and data extraction from SFTP servers, APIs
  • Proficiency in building, deploying, and optimizing machine learning models and pipelines using Python, with experience in PyTorch, TensorFlow, and Kubeflow
  • Experience with data transformation in SQL using tools like dbt or similar data processing frameworks
  • Experience with deploying interactive visualizations and building BI dashboards (Tableau, PowerBI, Looker, Databox)

Preferred Strategic Experience

  • Familiarity with modeling advertising performance and shopper behavior analysis within the CPG industry
  • Track record of contributing to strategic discussions with sales, product, and executive stakeholders

What you need to know about the Seattle Tech Scene

Home to tech titans like Microsoft and Amazon, Seattle punches far above its weight in innovation. But its surrounding mountains, sprinkled with world-famous hiking trails and climbing routes, make the city a destination for outdoorsy types as well. Established as a logging town before shifting to shipbuilding and logistics, the Emerald City is now known for its contributions to aerospace, software, biotech and cloud computing. And its status as a thriving tech ecosystem is attracting out-of-town companies looking to establish new tech and engineering hubs.

Key Facts About Seattle Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 287,000; 13% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Amazon, Microsoft, Meta, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, cloud computing, software, biotechnology, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $3.1 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Madrona, Fuse, Tola, Maveron
  • Research Centers and Universities: University of Washington, Seattle University, Seattle Pacific University, Allen Institute for Brain Science, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Seattle Children’s Research Institute
