Product Design Engineer - New Product Development

Overview:
We are lookingfor a Product Design Engineer to join our US NPD team, creating a new generation of innovative home environment products for the Shark brand. We thrive on designing great products that delight our customers. Working at our Needham, MA headquarters, you will bring technical substance and inspiration to our creative efforts to deliver credible solutions to the market.
Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborates to help establish a project's user, design, and functional requirements, deliver robust solutions to satisfy those requirements, then help to iterate through testing and building consensus on next steps.
  • Takes a lead role (independently and in teams) to solve technical issues found in the development of a product.
  • Takes overall ownership of designs through conception, CAD execution, prototyping and verification, whilst consistently working at pace.
  • Continuously evaluates and improves designs for cost efficiency, manufacturing improvements, increased quality and value to consumers.
  • Works closely with our R&D team to build prototypes and testing rigs to integrate optimization for product performance.
  • Applies sound engineering and product design standards to deliver real solutions.
  • Applies understanding & experience of high-volume manufacturing processes and materials to optimize designs.
  • Communicates effectively and professionally with colleagues.


Attributes & Skills:

  • A degree in Mechanical Engineering, Product Design, Industrial Design, or a related engineering discipline with a focus on engineering principles.
  • Typically, 1-3 years of proven experience in mechanical, electrical, mechatronics, product design, or industrial design within the consumer goods, household appliance, or similar sectors.
  • Experience in using SolidWorks, Creo, or other CAD software for product design. Familiarity with prototyping and hands-on development of functional models is key.
  • An understanding of plastic, casting, and sheet metal manufacturing processes is desirable.
  • Comfortable with building and testing prototypes, working in lab environments, and developing detailed reports based on findings. Ability to solve technical problems and iterate on solutions based on test results.
  • A positive attitude and strong teamwork skills, with a preference for working collaboratively across teams and geographies to achieve product goals.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment. A strong growth mindset and the desire to continuously improve and learn new skills.
  • Appreciation for electrical engineering, software, and mechanical systems-acting as a well-rounded designer who can contribute to both hardware and system solutions.
  • An entrepreneurial approach to tackling challenges and delivering solutions, using creative thinking and data-driven decisions to push the boundaries of what's possible in product development.


Desirable Skills:

  • Consumer Goods Experience: Experience in the household appliance or consumer electronics industry is highly desirable.
  • IP Awareness: Familiarity with working alongside IP teams to track prior art, assess patentability, and explore novel solutions within the product development process.
  • Global Collaboration Experience: Experience working with cross-functional teams in different regions, such as the US, UK, or China, is a plus.
