Metabase is the easiest way for people to get insights from their data, from tiny startups who get up and running quickly to major corporations with tens of thousands of users. That's why people love us.

We bring data tools with the elegance and simplicity of consumer products to the crufty world of enterprise business intelligence. We provide an opinionated open source starting point for how companies should measure, analyze and share their data, which is used by tens of thousands of companies.

We’re looking for a self-motivated, detail-oriented, and highly-capable individual to join our People team as a People Operations Generalist. This role is ideal for someone who is naturally curious, thrives on problem-solving, and can balance structure with flexibility. You’ll play a key role in ensuring compliance with US labor laws while supporting global compliance and immigration initiatives.

You don’t need a traditional HR background, but you should be resourceful, analytical, and business-minded, with the ability to make sound, practical recommendations based on research and legal requirements. If you’re comfortable with ambiguity, enjoy finding solutions, and take pride in keeping things running smoothly, this role is for you.

Bonus points if you’ve worked in globally distributed teams. This is a great opportunity to learn and grow in a global organization.

What You'll Do:

  • Research & Problem-Solving: Investigate HR and employment compliance topics across different regions, assess risks, and provide practical recommendations.
  • Immigration Support: Assist with U.S. and Canadian visa and immigration processes, coordinating with external legal counsel to ensure a smooth experience for employees.
  • Compliance: Support key People processes—including onboarding, offboarding, and systems access requests—while partnering with the BizOps team to assist with annual finance and SOC2 audits.
  • Operational Execution: Help implement and refine People Ops processes, ensuring they are both legally sound and business-friendly.
  • Vendor & Tools Management: Research and evaluate external tools, vendors, and partners to improve HR efficiency.
  • Data & Reporting: Pull and analyze reports, track key compliance requirements, and ensure accuracy in documentation.
  • Trusted Support: Act as a reliable and discreet resource, handling sensitive information with care and helping to create clear, structured policies.
  • Ad Hoc Projects & Initiatives: Support key People initiatives as needed, including managing People data, assisting with performance management, helping with talent operations, and coordinating logistics for our annual all-hands offsite.

Who You Are:

  • Highly Intelligent & Resourceful: You don’t need all the answers upfront, but you know how to find them. You can break down complex issues and make informed, practical recommendations.
  • Detail-Oriented & Organized: You naturally catch the small things others miss and take pride in keeping things running smoothly.
  • Business-Minded & Pragmatic: You understand that HR exists to support the business and can navigate compliance requirements while considering operational needs.
  • Trustworthy & Discreet: You handle confidential information with integrity and can be counted on to execute reliably.
  • Curious & Adaptable: You’re excited about learning the ins and outs of People Operations and growing your expertise over time.
  • Startup & Operations Mindset: You’re comfortable wearing multiple hats, figuring things out on the fly, and working autonomously in a fast-paced, evolving environment.
  • Low-Ego Attitude: No job is too small or too large—you're willing to dive in wherever needed and take on challenges with a hands-on approach.

Why Join Us?

This role is an opportunity to build foundational HR skills while balancing business needs, compliance, and people operations. You’ll get hands-on experience in a dynamic, global environment, collaborating with leaders who value smart, thoughtful decision-making. At Metabase, we appreciate those who get things done, honor their commitments, keep things moving, seek to understand, and are thoughtful (at speed). Our People team is dedicated to caring for our team in a way that aligns with their needs, and the People Operations Generalist will play a crucial role in supporting our team’s compliant growth throughout the employee lifecycle—from recruiting to onboarding and offboarding. If you’re resourceful, adaptable, and eager to contribute to scalable People processes in a global startup, we’d love to hear from you.

We're a global team (50% outside the US), fully distributed (from Thailand to California), who get things done asynchronously, with plenty of uninterrupted time, supporting each other to do the best work of our careers. We offer flexibility (define your own schedule and work from wherever you want), autonomy, and an environment that fosters growth, learning, and development. We're relentlessly user-focused and believe in building long-term value, not short-term hacks. And we raised a $30M Series B to take our approach to the next level for years to come.

For U.S. applicants: Metabase participates in the federal E-Verify program, which confirms employment authorization of newly hired U.S. based employees. E-Verify is not used as a tool to pre-screen candidates and is only initiated upon hire.
