Since we opened our doors in 2009, the world of commerce has evolved immensely, and so has Square. After enabling anyone to take payments and never miss a sale, we saw sellers stymied by disparate, outmoded products and tools that wouldn't work together.
So we expanded into software and started building integrated, omnichannel solutions - to help sellers sell online, manage inventory, offer buy now, pay later functionality, book appointments, engage loyal buyers, and hire and pay staff. Across it all, we've embedded financial services tools at the point of sale, so merchants can access a business loan and manage their cash flow in one place. Afterpay furthers our goal to provide omnichannel tools that unlock meaningful value and growth, enabling sellers to capture the next generation shopper, increase order sizes, and compete at a larger scale.
Today, we are a partner to sellers of all sizes - large, enterprise-scale businesses with complex operations, sellers just starting, as well as merchants who began selling with Square and have grown larger over time. As our sellers grow, so do our solutions. There is a massive opportunity in front of us. We're building a significant, meaningful, and lasting business, and we are helping sellers worldwide do the same.
The Role
The Onboarding team is responsible for the experiences within our mobile apps that help establish our Sellers' identity with the product we provide and support them as issues arise. This spans features across authentication (sign-in and multi-factor), onboarding (Know Your Customer), account security, support, and help live messaging across the Square ecosystem of products.
You will

  • Manage a team of 9 mobile engineers (iOS and Android)
  • Represent the team in architectural discussions and stakeholder conversations, serving as a bridge between our team and the broader organization
  • Work with product managers, designers, and data scientists to shape the future of onboarding-related product areas at Square
  • Define and prioritize the technical roadmap for the team
  • Shape the future of our codebase by building flexible, extendable, and reusable components
  • Provide technical guidance and uphold technical standards for systems and applications
  • Foster a culture of engineering excellence and mentor engineers of all experience levels
  • Collaborate with other managers and senior leaders to ensure alignment across the organization
  • Contribute to a culture of positivity, psychological safety, and inclusivity within the team.

You have

  • 3+ years of people management experience leading a team of mobile engineers (both iOS and Android)
  • Prior experience in mobile application development with a focus in Android
  • Experience working with multiple stakeholders, driving alignment, and championing performance

Technologies we use and teach

  • Kotlin/Swift, leveraging Square's modern open source library, Workflow
  • Espresso, Snapshot, Gradle
  • Protocol buffers for network transport
  • Also exposure to LeakCanary, RXJava, Dagger, Mortar, and Okhttp among others

Home to tech titans like Microsoft and Amazon, Seattle punches far above its weight in innovation. But its surrounding mountains, sprinkled with world-famous hiking trails and climbing routes, make the city a destination for outdoorsy types as well. And its status as a thriving tech ecosystem is attracting out-of-town companies looking to establish new tech and engineering hubs.

Key Facts About Seattle Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 287,000; 13% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Amazon, Microsoft, Meta, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, cloud computing, software, biotechnology, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $3.1 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Madrona, Fuse, Tola, Maveron
