Manager, Engineering
Liberty Mutual Personal Lines (Part of USRM) Technology is embarking on an exciting technology transformation journey to build a modern, future ready Unified Insurance Platform that will radically simplify our policy administration platform eco system and enable business agility.
We are looking for an exceptional engineering leader to drive our transformation. As a Manager of Engineering, you will align your team's outcomes with our High-Performance Engineering standards. You will foster a high-performance culture, mentor team members, and support their continuous learning and growth. You will also identify and nurture talent, engage in career development discussions, and offer strategic guidance.
You will set clear, measurable goals aligned with Liberty Mutual's strategy, monitor progress, assess performance, and maintain accountability. Your results-oriented approach will focus on delivering outcomes that support our modernization initiatives. As an engineering leader, you will build and lead a high-performing team capable of shipping products incrementally, balancing speed with scalability.
We are currently hiring engineering managers in US Retail Markets Technology with multiple openings across the Personal Lines Unified Insurance Platform department.
Note: This role is hybrid requiring managers to be in our Plano, TX offce 2x per week.
In this role you will:
Provide technical expertise to stakeholders, tech management, and staff:

  • Ensure the right technology exists to support our business investments and manage the overall cost of technology in alignment with our north star architecture.
  • Lead/participate in the analysis, design, and technical implementation of functional enhancements for the Guidewire product suite, adhering to provided technical specifications and business requirements.
  • Drive high-quality software releases with efficient, agile development methodologies while balancing speed-to-market with long-term scalability.
  • Partner with enterprise architecture, infrastructure, data, and security teams to ensure technology decisions support the broader enterprise vision.
  • Ensure quality outcomes of the teams by adhering to engineering and best practices; own product health including security, stability, reliability, and communication for major system incidents.
  • Perform complex system designs and participate in code reviews.
  • Collaborate closely with Product teams to ensure system, technical, and product architectures are aligned with business objectives.


Build, lead, and scale a world-class software engineering team with a globally distributed footprint, instilling a culture of innovation, collaboration, and technical excellence.

  • Mentor and grow engineering leaders and individual contributors, by fostering a high-performance engineering organization. Establish a strong engineering culture that emphasizes continuous learning, technical craftsmanship, and accountability.
  • Participate in the development of business and/or tech vision, critical success factors, and operating plans. Develop and communicate unit vision, strategies, objectives, key results, and plans.
  • Hire, lead, coach, counsel, and develop team members. Define individual performance goals and co-create development plans, ensuring alignment with organizational objectives.
  • Evaluate team and individual performance and make compensation recommendations.
  • Initiate and foster business partnerships with current and potential clients, vendors, and tech executives. Develop relationships that support increasing efficiency and effectiveness and balance individual client needs with business priorities.
  • Establish the financial plan for the unit and manage to plan.
  • Manage capacity planning and strategy for hiring, managing, and deploying staff across teams to enable optimal alignment to business needs; responsible for sourcing strategy to meet capacity needs, including vendor management and offshore strategy, in a cost-efficient manner.
  • Be accountable for the timing of execution and delivery of product outcomes along with business stakeholders; work as needed to align priorities and remove roadblocks to ensure delivery of product outcomes.
  • Initiate process and organizational improvement activities which enhance overall effectiveness, seeking ways to improve human resource and other management processes.
  • Develop and maintain a network of industry contacts, perform or direct research on industry trends, competitors, business, and tech products, and analyze trends to make strategic and tactical recommendations.


Qualifications
Leadership:

  • Minimum 5 years' experience in a practice relevant domain including delivering software solutions in an agile environment.
  • Minimum 3 years in a leadership role managing teams of engineers and architecture.Proven experience leading large engineering teams (100+ engineers) in distributed/global environments.
  • Passion for building engineering culture, mentoring leaders, recruiting senior and junior talent, and driving high-impact teams.
  • Budgeting and financial oversight, including cost estimation, resource allocation, and financial reporting.
  • Exceptional ability to collaborate and build consensus with cross-functional stakeholders, particularly Product Management.
  • Excellent communication, analytical ability, consultative, presentation and management skills.

Technical Expertise:

  • Experience building P&C Policy Administration system using Commercial Off The Shelf (COTS) product (preferably Guidewire).
  • Track record of modernizing legacy technology stacks and leading digital transformation initiatives.
  • In-depth knowledge of technology standards and guidelines.
  • Deep expertise in wealth management or asset management technology.
  • Strong knowledge of cloud-native architectures, microservices, API-driven development, DevOps, and CI/CD.
  • Able to manage complex technology development concepts, capabilities and maturity.
  • In-depth knowledge of agile software delivery principles and models.
  • Strong knowledge of cloud-native architectures, microservices, API-driven development, DevOps, and CI/CD.


Education:

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, technical or business discipline or equivalent experience.
