TITLE: Manager, AI/ML Engineering
LOCATION: New York City (hybrid) or Fully Remote in the United States
SALARY: $170,000 - $215,000 (based on NYC, will be adjusted for geo)
The Role:
We are seeking an experienced and motivated Software Engineering Manager to lead and inspire our AI/ML team. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in Machine Learning and a history of creating ML-based solutions to solve customer problems. You'll play a key role in overseeing and guiding ML work, cultivating technical talent, and accelerating Canoe's product growth.
What You'll Do:

  • Lead, mentor, and manage a team of four to eight AI engineers.
  • Foster a collaborative and inclusive team culture, promoting professional growth and development.
  • Drive the hiring process to attract top talent.
  • Collaborate with product management and other stakeholders to define and prioritize technical projects.
  • Manage project timelines, deliverables, and resources to ensure successful project completion.
  • Identify and mitigate risks, remove roadblocks, and ensure a continuous flow of information within the team.
  • Adapt to changing requirements and provide innovative solutions to complex technical challenges.


What We're Looking For:

  • Minimum of 8 years of experience in software development or data science roles, with at least 5 in machine learning with a focus on NLP.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience leading teams and managing ICs.
  • Demonstrated experience working cross functionally with Product and other Engineering teams to deliver ML-driven solutions.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with ambiguous or missing information and adapt quickly in a startup-like environment.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and a passion for getting involved in both technical details and high-level strategy.
  • Experience in information extraction, entity resolution, and entity disambiguation.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent experience).


Preferred:

  • Master's Degree in Computer Science with a focus on Data Science or Machine Learning.
  • Experience delivering a machine learning project end-to-end.
  • Familiarity with large language models.
  • Familiarity with cloud computing platforms and distributed computing.
  • Familiarity with the modern ML stack, including tools such as Modal, Weights and Biases, Hugging Face, etc.
  • A curious explorer who keeps up to date with latest technical developments and has a good knowledge of the process of building ML systems.
  • A leader who promotes a culture of curiosity, inclusion, and humility.
