Consumer Software Engineering is all about the end user. This team manages all front-end development for the consumer-facing apps that house Disney's portfolio of brands. For example, if you're watching Disney+ on your Apple TV - and the interface is engaging, responsive, and seamless - you have this team to thank. The list of platforms this team manages includes: iOS & Android; Smart TVs like Samsung, LG, Chromecast, Roku, & Amazon; game consoles like Xbox and PlayStation; and desktop & mobile web browsers.
Job Summary:
As a Lead Software Engineer for the Consumer Software Engineering, Solutions Architecture team, you will help us innovate and build the future of streaming for millions of viewers! You'll work alongside a team of other solutions architects and partner with product managers, client developers, and backend engineers to help design, implement, and efficiently deliver new initiatives across our portfolio of streaming applications, including Disney+, ESPN+, and Hulu.
Responsibilities

  • Partner with teams across engineering, product, and design to help refine requirements for and drive the delivery of new technical initiatives in the playback domain across our breadth of client applications.
  • Assess the technical feasibility of new features and identify possible solutions for their implementation, reviewing these solutions and building consensus with our partner teams to begin execution.
  • Collaborate closely with engineers across client and service teams to facilitate the implementation of these features, with an eye toward platform consistency and scalability.
  • Infrequently but occasionally help support significant releases during non-standard business hours.


Basic Qualifications

  • Minimum 7+ years of experience building highly scalable and performant production level applications.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field, or equivalent training or work experience.
  • Ability to communicate complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Experience collaborating with team members across a variety of domains. Our work requires us to build trust and rally the support of our peers to influence and effect technical change!
  • Demonstrated curiosity in researching and learning new tools and technologies.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with video streaming technologies including HLS, MPEG-DASH, and DRM.
  • Detailed knowledge of over-the-top (OTT) concepts, including encoding, packaging, and delivery.
  • Experience working with and integrating GraphQL and/or REST APIs.
  • Experience reading specifications written in OpenAPI.
  • Experience with technical writing and maintaining user documentation and technical specifications.
  • Experience mentoring junior team members and delivering encouraging and constructive feedback.


The hiring range for this position in Los Angeles, CA is $149,300 to $200,200 per year, in San Francisco, CA is $160,000 to $217,000 per year and in New York, NY and Seattle, WA is $155,000 to $210,000 per year. The base pay actually offered will take into account internal equity and also may vary depending on the candidate's geographic region, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience among other factors. A bonus and/or long-term incentive units may be provided as part of the compensation package, in addition to the full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits, dependent on the level and position offered.
