JOB DESCRIPTION

Calling all originals: At Levi Strauss & Co., you can be yourself — and be part of something bigger. We’re a company of people who like to forge our own path and leave the world better than we found it. Who believe that what makes us different makes us stronger. So add your voice. Make an impact. Find your fit — and your future.

As the Lead Engineer, Loyalty, you will design, build, and operate highly scalable systems and domain APIs that power key customer experiences across our mobile app, e-commerce website, and in-store systems. You will be a hands-on contributor in a “you build it, you run it” environment, responsible for all aspects of the system—from design and development to deployment, observability, and product support. You will also conduct code reviews, ensuring engineers follow best practices and principles while driving the organization toward modern, scalable systems. Our domain APIs must support customers in any country, and all countries must be supported within a single, unified domain API. Additionally, you will work across domain APIs to ensure domain concerns are properly defined, modeled correctly, and maintain consistent interfaces across domains.

About the Job

  • System Design & Development: Design and implement scalable, reliable, and secure solutions for the Loyalty platform, including domain APIs consumed by different systems (e.g., mobile app, website, and in-store systems). Apply event-driven architecture principles to design and implement systems that handle high-throughput workloads.

  • Engineering Ownership: Own the functional, technical, and operational aspects of the platform, including development, test automation, deployment automation, and observability. Maintain high levels of uptime and performance by designing software with failure resilience in mind.

  • Code Reviews & Best Practices: Conduct code reviews and ensure adherence to engineering best practices, coding standards, and architectural principles. Guide the team in adopting modern software development approaches.

  • API & Event-Driven Architecture: Develop APIs with excellent design principles, ensuring scalability and simplicity for consumers. Ensure domain APIs support customers globally and are unified within each domain. Design and implement event-driven workflows and integrations to ensure seamless interactions across systems.

  • Cross-Domain Collaboration: Collaborate across teams to ensure domain concerns are defined, modeled correctly, and implemented across APIs. Harmonize interfaces and promote consistency across all domain APIs.

  • Test & Deployment Automation: Develop automated test suites to ensure code quality and functionality. Create deployment pipelines for seamless delivery of new features and fixes.

  • Observability & Support: Implement logging, monitoring, and alerting solutions to enhance system observability and detect issues. Collaborate with product and support teams to troubleshoot and resolve complex system problems.

  • Collaboration & Mentorship: Work with product managers and designers to deliver impactful features. Mentor junior engineers and promote best practices in software development and cloud architecture.

  • Team: Leads by example and mentors others to produce and maintainable code used across products. Lead efforts to optimize, debug, refactor, and reuse code to improve performance and maintainability, effectiveness, and return on investment.

  • You will report to the Director of IT & Micro-services

  • You will be Remote in the USA

About You

  • Required Experience: 10+ years of professional software engineering experience, with experience in cloud-based architectures.

  • Expertise in at least one major programming language (e.g., Java, Python, Go, C#). Experience with cloud platforms (AWS preferred, Azure or GCP acceptable), including services like Lambda, DynamoDB, S3, and messaging systems (e.g., SNS, SQS, Kafka).

  • Experience with API design principles, RESTful or GraphQL standards. Experience with event-driven architecture using systems like Kafka, EventBridge, or similar. Proficiency in CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure as code (e.g., Terraform, CloudFormation), and containerization (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes).

  • Mastery of modern software development practices, including agile and lean tenets, CI/CD, and the broader DevOps movement with demonstrated improvements to software delivery performance.

The expected starting salary range for this role is $144,000- $208,700 per year. We may ultimately pay more or less than the posted range based on the location of the role. The amount a particular employee will earn within the salary range will be based on factors such as relevant education, qualifications, performance and business needs.

What you need to know about the Seattle Tech Scene

Home to tech titans like Microsoft and Amazon, Seattle punches far above its weight in innovation. But its surrounding mountains, sprinkled with world-famous hiking trails and climbing routes, make the city a destination for outdoorsy types as well. Established as a logging town before shifting to shipbuilding and logistics, the Emerald City is now known for its contributions to aerospace, software, biotech and cloud computing. And its status as a thriving tech ecosystem is attracting out-of-town companies looking to establish new tech and engineering hubs.

Key Facts About Seattle Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 287,000; 13% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Amazon, Microsoft, Meta, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, cloud computing, software, biotechnology, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $3.1 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Madrona, Fuse, Tola, Maveron
  • Research Centers and Universities: University of Washington, Seattle University, Seattle Pacific University, Allen Institute for Brain Science, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Seattle Children’s Research Institute
