Help lead the digital transformation of one of Seattle’s most iconic media brands, driving key initiatives to optimize print while accelerating digital growth.


The Seattle Times has an opening for a creative, energetic graphic artist who specializes in data visualization and/or science illustration to join our visual team. We cover news and events that impact the people who live, work and care about Seattle and the surrounding region. In addition to providing excellent journalism, our team uses charting, mapping, illustration and interactivity to explain to and engage with our audiences both in print and on our digital platforms.


The ideal candidate will be comfortable working on deadline in a fast-paced environment. The graphic artist will be responsible for examining data sets, building relevant charts and maps, as well as interactive projects. They should be a self-starter who is able to think creatively and provide visual solutions to enhance and support our journalism.

What will you do?

  • Produce effective data visuals and informational graphics (static and/or interactive) for daily and project use within the established style guidelines for various coverage areas on multiple platforms.
  • Work quickly, accurately and efficiently under tight deadlines, making sound decisions around story angles and technical approaches.
  • Take a multiplatform approach to design and storytelling and participate in the associated prototyping, storyboarding and planning endeavors.

  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work as part of a cross-disciplinary team including writers, photographers and editors.
  • Experience advancing equity and inclusion in news coverage.

 

Requirements

  • Experience: Three years of experience in a news organization preferred.
  • Ability to create charts, maps, diagrams, interactive graphics or visual projects for same-day turnaround, as well as projects that may take more time.
  • Knowledge of charting tools such as Adobe Creative Suite, Datawrapper, Flourish, Excel and Google Sheets.
  • Experience with responsive web design techniques.
  • Demonstrated ability to take concepts and translate into visual storytelling images or interactive web pieces.
  • Experience with current web standards, including HTML, CSS, JavaScript and relevant data visualization libraries.
  • Established illustration styles.
  • Ability to capture concepts in surprising and delightful ways.
  • Ability to work in high pressure, fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
  • Experience/ familiarity with pagination systems and WordPress preferred.


Work Location: This is a hybrid role requiring days each week in our Seattle office.


Compensation: The full salary range for this position is $61,200 to $97,000. We typically pay between $61,200 and $85,000, depending on experience and qualifications.
