A Little About Us

We want to reimagine the Yahoo Weather experience across the company – from the Yahoo Weather apps to the Yahoo homepage. As millions of people use Yahoo Weather each day to understand how the weather will impact them, we believe that investing in a better product experience will help us fulfill Yahoo’s mission to be a trusted guide to online content and enable people to accomplish their goals no matter how big or small. We are excited to speak with mid-level to senior-level software engineers for this role.

A Lot About You

You are a front-end web engineer who welcomes the challenge of building a new product experience from the ground up. You are comfortable being one of the first members of a newly formed team. You love to collaborate with product designers to understand customer problems and deliver great user experiences. You are highly self-sufficient but also thrive when working together with teammates. You care about the whole product experience. You enjoy sprints as much as strategy. You are curious, driven and know how to find a work-life balance.

Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with a small team to design, build, and deliver features for Yahoo Weather.

  • Code – you will spend most of your time writing code using React, focused on rebuilding the web product experience. This includes new feature development, architecture, writing unit tests, refactors, and bug/crash fixes, and future support.

  • Build reusable and performant catalog of interactive web components for Yahoo Weather, and other Yahoo properties.

  • Share responsibilities like architecture/design reviews, code reviews, performance tuning, and build pipeline management.

  • Own and deliver – from the small must-do tasks to larger, complex projects with many moving parts.

  • Share your opinions and help shape our technical direction, best practices, product ideas, and team processes. We value and depend on your input!

Minimum Qualifications:

  • 4+ years experience building and shipping across the web

  • Experience building server-side rendered React web applications

  • Solid knowledge of the core technologies that make the web possible. You can fluently speak in HTML, Javascript and CSS, and you use Web Vitals to deliver the best possible user experience

  • Excellent coding chops, code design skills, and practitioner of web development best practices – including object-oriented design principles; design pattern usage; writing modular, reusable, testable code; data structures; concurrency; performance profiling and tuning

  • Excellent analytical, problem solving, and debugging skills

  • The quintessential teammate – great communicator, adaptable, supportive, hard working, and enjoys a good laugh

  • An interest in weather and strong opinions about weather apps is a plus!

The material job duties and responsibilities of this role include those listed above as well as adhering to Yahoo policies; exercising sound judgment; working effectively, safely and inclusively with others; exhibiting trustworthiness and meeting expectations; and safeguarding business operations and brand integrity.

  • Number of Tech Workers: 287,000; 13% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Amazon, Microsoft, Meta, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, cloud computing, software, biotechnology, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $3.1 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Madrona, Fuse, Tola, Maveron
