Job Description

The Washington Post is hiring a Front End Engineer for our subscription team to focus on building and supporting internal and externally facing systems. The Digital Subscriptions org is a fast paced, high growth environment that respects its engineers and customers. Responsibilities

  • Participate in all stages of software development - from brainstorming and prototyping to designing, implementing, testing and support

  • Develop web applications primarily using React and Node, ensuring they are scalable, performant, secure, and user-friendly.

  • Architect, build and deploy applications on AWS

  • Write detailed specifications when appropriate.

  • Use your experience to help guide technical decisions and participate in technical architecture discussion

  • Work independently on moderately complex projects, setting day-to-day objectives and prioritizing tasks.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams (Engineering, Product, Design, News and  Business) to develop comprehensive solutions for user experiences and their data

  • This role requires limited on-call hours. An on-call schedule will be determined a couple of months after you join, considering team size and other variables.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • BA/BS in Computer Science or a related technical field or equivalent practical experience.

  • Experience with git or similar source code management

  • 3+ years experience with React 16 and Node is required.

  •  Proficiency in TypeScript for building robust and maintainable web applications.

  • Experience writing unit tests and integration tests to ensure code quality; experience with Playwright is a plus

  • Exposure to engineering tools such as DataDog, Splunk, and Catchpoint

  • Experience with DevOps technologies such as Docker and Jenkins.

  • Strong problem-solving skills, capable of handling moderately complex challenges.

  • Knowledge of best practices in software development, including testing, deployment, and code reviews.

  • Ability to work independently with general supervision, setting day-to-day priorities.

  • Excellent communication skills for collaborating with internal teams, providing technical input, and receiving and acting on feedback.

  • Work independently with general supervision, prioritizing daily tasks to meet project goals and communicating with stakeholders, team, and management to develop and meet project timelines.

  • Ability to ensure cross-browser and cross-device functionality and troubleshoot browser-specific issues.

  • Experience in performance optimization debugging to improve load times, core web vitals, and user experience.

Preferred Qualification

  • 5+ years experience with React and Node.

  • Experience with React 18

  • Hands on experience with Next JS Framework

  •  Exposure to back-end technologies such as Java EE, Spring Boot, and JUnit is a plus.

  •  Practical experience with Application servers (Wildfly, Tomcat) and Web servers (httpd, Nginx).

  • Working knowledge of relational databases such as Oracle, MySQL, Postgres and NoSQL databases such as Redis, DynamoDB, MongoDB.

  • Hands on experiencing developing, deploying and maintaining systems using AWS services such as ECS, EC2, RDS, S3, Lambda, SQS/SNS.

The Washington Post’s policy for employees is five days per week in the office, with exceptions for newsgathering and general business travel.

Benefits may vary based on the job, full-time or part-time schedule, location, and collectively bargained status.

The salary range for this position is:

98,800.00 - 164,600.00 USD Annual

The actual salary within this range will depend on individual skills, experience, and qualifications as they relate to specific job requirements. This position may be eligible for a bonus or incentive program, and a member of the Talent Acquisition team will discuss bonus payment terms and conditions during the interview process.
