About The Position | Major goals and objectives and location requirements

PEOPLE is hiring an executive editor to oversee the newsroom for the new PEOPLE app. The executive editor will report to the app’s editorial director and will be responsible for managing a news team that works around-the-clock. They will set and manage content priorities for the newsroom, ensuring a steady flow of content across days and time zones, overseeing four senior editors. They will ensure the staff hits aggressive daily content goals without compromising editorial standards and quality. The executive editor will manage longer-term planning, like events, special issues, recurring series and rollout content, determining staffing, assigning producers and ensuring deadlines are met

Shrewd news instincts are key, as well as an advanced understanding of analytics and audience development. Prioritization is probably the most essential skill. Will need this person to be constantly coordinating across multi-disciplinary teams to identify news priorities based on analytics, social-media driven trends and more factors. They must be able to coach writers, producers, photo editors and visual designers to their best work, manage a large team and interact with people from many departments. Social media experience is preferred. Experience in a start-up environment is a plus. 

The right person will have a multimedia vision of how to present news to readers who are addicted to TikTok and Instagram, who want to be entertained and informed at the same time. They will be steeped in the PEOPLE brand and how we tell compelling stories. 

This position is hybrid and based in New York, NY. 

Hybrid 3x a week- (New York) 

In-office Expectations: This position is hybrid in-office, with the ability to work remotely for up to 3 days per week.

Our ambition is to become the necessary app for anyone who wishes to stay in the know of pop culture. The team creates easily digestible multimedia content — both original and adapted from existing PEOPLE stories/access — for Gen Z. 

About The Positions Contributions: Weight % Accountabilities, Actions and Expected Measurable Results

30% Prioritizing assignments across multiple verticals throughout business hours, editing as needed

20% Reviewing daily analytics to make strategic recommendations

20% Managing and mentoring a team of producers, helping them achieve individualized KPIs

20% Managing organizational efforts like an editorial calendar, staffing calendar and training/onboarding

10% Supporting the editorial director with research and strategy for longterm planning

The Role’s Minimum Qualifications and Job Requirements:

Education:

BA or BS or equivalent experience

Experience:

Min 8 years experience working in a high volume, high velocity digital news operation. Must have 2 years of leadership experience in a digital newsroom. Bonus for social-native experience.

Specific Knowledge, Skills, Certifications and Abilities:

•Strong management skills, with an ability to serve as a coach to junior talent.

• Impeccable news judgement and an ability to balance priorities while driving traffic and engagement.

• Strong editing skills and impeccable journalistic standards and attention to detail.

• An advanced understanding of analytics and audience development.

• Strong understanding of the general interest news landscape and evolving audience interests.
