Another e-commerce marketplace is opening up shop in Amazon’s backyard.
Boston-based Wayfair recently revealed that it will open up an office in Seattle in 2022. The news was announced in an internal memo late last week.
The new Seattle office will serve as one of Wayfair’s Technology Development Centers, providing a home for the company’s various tech teams. This office space comes in addition to the company’s distribution warehouse in Kent, which is part of Wayfair’s end-to-end logistics network.
Wayfair is also going on a local hiring spree to fill out the new office. The company says it’s looking to hire over 200 people in Seattle. Over 40 of these job openings are currently listed on the Wayfair website, with roles ranging from engineering to marketing, operations and more. People hired for these roles in the near future will work remotely until the office opens next year, according to a company spokesperson.
“Our team of more than 3,000 technologists have built the preeminent e-commerce platform for the home category, and this expansion will allow us to continue to build cutting-edge solutions for our customers and suppliers; from machine learning and data science to next-generation merchandising, logistics innovations and more,” a company spokesperson told Built In in an email. “With this latest Wayfair Technology Development Center, we’re excited to join the Seattle community and contribute to its reputation as a world-class city.”
Wayfair operates an online home furnishings marketplace with over 22 million items. It also operates several other e-commerce brands — including Joss & Main, AllModern, Birch Lane and Perigold — which sell furniture, décor, housewares, home improvement goods and more.
The company had a very successful year in 2020, generating $14.1 billion in net revenue. In response to this awesome year, Wayfair announced several ambitious growth plans in 2021. This new Seattle office is actually the fourth new Technology Development Center, following the company’s new offices in Toronto, Austin and the Bay Area. These new office locations were announced in April, and at the time the company said it was hiring about 1,000 people across the three locations.
With Seattle, these four Technology Development Centers will be Wayfair’s first satellite offices outside of its global headquarters in Boston and European headquarters in Berlin.
