Anyone who has solved a large crossword puzzle knows that sometimes it’s best to simply walk away from complexity and return to it later with a fresh set of eyes.

For Director of Revenue Operations Nic Steinbach, this idea can also be applied to one’s career. Upon concluding his first stint at Identity Digital, he shared, he took some time to understand more about himself and his professional ambitions, which ultimately led him all over the world.

Nevertheless, Steinbach still maintained his connections with former colleagues at Identity Digital. He said that these relationships played a significant role in cementing his decision to return.

Now, Steinbach is ready to solve the giant crossword puzzle that defines Identity Digital with support from those around him.

“I’m most excited to have the opportunity to be working on a multifaceted puzzle with a fresh perspective, using new insights that were developed while I was away by familiar colleagues and new thought leaders,” he said.

Built In Seattle caught up with Steinbach to learn what makes Identity Digital the kind of company that compels employees to return.

About Identity Digital

Identity Digital offers top-level domains in an effort to help brands build, market and own their online presence. The company works with brands across various industries, from retail and travel to real estate and communications.

What drew you back to Identity Digital?

After leaving Identity Digital, I did a bit of soul-searching, backpacking and a few quick stints at other organizations. I maintained a lot of the strong personal and professional relationships that I had developed over the years with team members at Identity Digital despite bouncing around all over the world. When a position opened up, I was excited to continue my professional journey with people I knew worked well with me at an organization that I trusted.

What advice would you offer to leaders who wish to create the type of workplace that draws former employees back?

I think a lot of qualities define a truly great workplace, but the biggest quality that contributed to me coming back was clear communication. I can clearly remember my exit interview. I would strongly encourage any leader to develop and use thoughtful exit interviews to make sure that both the organization and employee are clear on what led to the separation and what could change in the future to encourage a boomerang.
