While the idiom of “real beauty comes from within” is true for people, when it comes to physical spaces — looks matter.

The idea of “environmental aesthetics” has been around since the early 1800s, but the field is expanding rapidly, developing connections to psychology as well as environmental planning and climate change mitigation. Where the research intersects, however, is the staunch conclusion that the aesthetics of our environments impact our mental health.

The workplace is no exception.

Built In Seattle spoke with Doubledown Interactive’s Employee Experience Manager Melissa Kleppinger about how the company keeps employee mental health front and center when designing new spaces to work.

DoubleDown Interactive is a casino business that has since expanded to include mobile platforms and gaming.

Tell us about DoubleDown Interactive’s approach to the in-office experience. How are these elements emblematic of your team culture?

The new DoubleDown office was designed with the well-being of employees in mind. Calming shades of blue and natural greenery throughout the space create a welcoming atmosphere. We have a dedicated massage room with essential oils where employees can relax. Each team member is set up with an adjustable desk and ergonomic chair to enhance overall comfort and accommodate diverse, individual needs. The breakroom is stocked with a variety of snacks and beverages as well as gaming equipment. It’s a space that fosters a collaborative environment beyond formal meetings, which is key to our workplace culture.

In your opinion, what about your in-office experience feels the most impactful on your daily work life? What is your favorite part of the in-person experience?

I love gathering as a team to try new things, celebrate milestones and learn from one another. The opportunities to connect with colleagues and engage in fun experiences with each other brings a sense of camaraderie. Besides catered meals, we also support local cafes and restaurants with open tabs that encourage employees to take a break outside the office, mingle with coworkers and choose their own meals. Overall, the best part about being in the office is spending time with the people I work with, they’re awesome!

Is there anything you’re looking forward to with the in-office experience?

The newly renovated office has a whole new vibe. It’s a unique blend of classic DoubleDown with a sleek and biophilic design. A great deal of thought and care was put into this project. I look forward to seeing employees’ reactions and enjoying the space together.
