Like dozens of other major tech companies, especially those with headquarters in Silicon Valley and San Francisco, Dropbox decided to take advantage of the talent pool in the pacific northwest and expand its workforce to Seattle. Announcing their move in late 2014, Dropbox has since steadily grown the Seattle office and the location is proving to be a strong extension of their headquarters in San Francisco. If you're unfamiliar with the company, Dropbox is a cloud storage provider, offering storage and sharing solutions to individuals and businesses. Founded to help people and teams keep their lives organized and in sync, Dropbox offers a unified and secure base for files, data and collaboration tools accessible across devices.
Inside the Dropbox Seattle Office
Located at 701 5th Avenue in Seattle’s towering Columbia Center skyscraper, Dropbox is one of the latest companies to choose Seattle as a satellite location. The office opened in the summer of 2015, becoming home to a small team of engineers. Within the first year, the office doubled in size and expanded to a second floor, providing space for up to 150 team members.
Located high up in the Columbia Center, the Dropbox office provides sweeping views of the city. The typical Seattle landmarks are all visible from the office: the Space Needle and Elliott Bay to Mt. Rainier and even downtown Bellevue in the distance.
Beyond typical work stations and common office amenities, Dropbox features conference rooms with peculiar names — some inside jokes and others Seattle-relevant terms explained away with a simple Google search. The office also boasts a colorful mural that incorporates a moose head, a decor piece that predated the team's move.
As Seattle proves to be a prime place for satellite offices, its no doubt this trend will continue with other companies. Seattle has an impressive workforce to draw from and because San Francisco and Silicon Valley continue to price out many talented workers, cities like Seattle, with space to grow and lower costs of living will draw in more big names.
