How do Seattle businesses attract and retain the best employees around? They pay employees to get out of the office.

Both of Built In Seattle’s featured companies this month have invested in supporting employees’ full lives inside and outside of work. Mobile game development company DoubleDown Interactive hosts a program called DoubleDown Engage, through which team members are able to foster meaningful connections, create a positive impact and contribute their time to nonprofit causes they support. Additionally, DoubleDown offers employees eight hours of paid time off each year to volunteer in the community, and has been running an annual step challenge since 2022, featuring a fitness team competition.

Employees at
Anduril get a bonus when they take a vacation that’s more than a week long, ensuring all team members get restorative time. In addition, Anduril employees with growing families receive comprehensive parental leave and childcare benefits — including fertility and adoption assistance for soon-to-be parents.

By providing benefits that aim to support employees’ work-life balance and connect them to their local communities, these organizations are developing a workplace where employees feel more included. Inclusive workplaces also have the benefit of attracting and retaining talented people, increasing employee engagement and improving overall company decision-making, according to research compiled in the Harvard Business Review.

Built In Seattle compiled the latest information on these two featured companies for tech professionals keeping an eye on businesses that foster inclusive, community-focused workplaces.
