Content Descriptions

BuiltIn’s mission is to unite thriving local tech communities by connecting local job seekers to innovative companies in their own backyard. To maintain full transparency with our community, we will outline our different content types and who maintains editorial control of each.

What is non-paid content?

Built In employs reporters and editors to produce articles — features, news, explainers and more — that are designed to instruct, inform and inspire both aspiring and existing technology professionals in the many markets we serve, from San Francisco to New York City. While, as a rule, we don't cover negative news stories, like scandals or shutdowns, regardless of whether the company is a client — a policy that helps us build and maintain a level of trust that is often instrumental in gaining access to sources at leading tech companies, as well as in getting those sources to share details about the inner workings of their companies — we do embrace industry-leading journalistic standards and best practices for all of the stories that we choose to pursue. We believe doing so is critical to maintaining the trust of our audience.

Those standards and practices mean that Built In’s editors maintain complete control of all editorial content, including publishing date and status; headline and promotional copy; article text and hyperlinks; company placement; and all accompanying art, photography and other multimedia elements. Types of editorial content you’ll find on BuiltIn.com and across our eight market sites includes but is not limited to:

Expert Contributor Content

Built In’s expert contributor program publishes thoughtful, solutions-oriented stories, commentary and dispatches written by innovative tech professionals in the trenches at businesses — from local startups to multinational corporations — across the nation. This detailed, insider section aims to inform and entertain an engaged tech audience by combining competitive insights with artful storytelling. It aspires to be the industry’s definitive destination for sharing compelling, first-person stories about overcoming challenges on the road to innovation.

Features & Explainers

Built In's features seek to tell compelling stories about technology and the workplace with the help of original reporting and highly knowledgeable sources from across the tech industry. Our features range from overhead views of industry and workplace trends to closer looks into how one founder, company or team is trying to innovate. We are fascinated by stories of how tech workers are solving problems in the world, in their fields and even within their own companies and teams.

News

Built In’s news coverage is a mix of quick-hit aggregation and value-add original reporting on funding announcements, new office openings, product launches, IPOs and other trending stories in the tech scenes across all of our market sites, from New York to San Francisco. The aim of our news reporting is to consistently deliver engaging, timely and accurate information that keeps our audience up to date on the innovative companies and thought leaders worth knowing in every city and region we cover.

Newsletters

Built In regularly sends a curated content newsletter that is designed to provide a selection of high-quality, engaging stories to our users based on their location and area/s of expertise. As a subscriber, you will not see everything we publish; you’ll only see that which we feel is most relevant to you and your work. All of the stories included in Built In’s newsletters are produced by one of our in-house content teams.

Professional Development Content

Professional development stories, which are designed to help people do their jobs better by highlighting how others in the industry are overcoming challenges in their work, are created for a variety of tech professionals. Each of these stories rely on sources that have hands-on experience with the topic at hand and can speak to the specifics of the challenges they’re addressing. And all of them offer concrete takeaways that readers can implement or illuminate important nuances in a field.

All professional development stories are written with a specific audience in mind and are developed by reporters with a specialization in the area they are covering; our current areas of focus include data and analytics, design and user experience, finance, human resources, legal, marketing, software development and engineering, content, operations, project management, product, and sales.

What is paid content?

Built In offers a paid for Premium Partnership wherein we work with companies to highlight their cultures, values and job openings. Built In is paid by Premium Employers to be included in specific content types, listed below. Built In maintains editorial control and decides when and why a company fits into a subject matter of our choice, including inclusion in an article, publishing date and status, headline, text, company placement and photography. Premium Employers relinquish editorial control, do not approve of content prior to publication and do not receive message-related opportunities for edits.

Our Sponsor companies maintain editorial control of the message and final article. A Sponsor company can also sponsor (labeled as “Sponsored By” or “Presented By”) a Built In event or non-paid lists. In the case of lists, Built In maintains complete editorial control over the final product.
